Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My fifth graders are very creative, thoughtful, and full of questions! My students love being hands-on and engaging in learning. They come to school every day ready to take on new challenges. Most of my students come from different backgrounds and are living below the poverty line.

My project is to create a positive, safe, calming corner in my classroom.

Every child encounters a time when they experience overwhelming emotions. Without self-regulation or a safe place to escape, these emotions can spiral.

One student at a time will be able to check in to the Calm Down Corner where they will set a timer a five-minute timer. During these five minutes, the student will be able to pick something from the basket of stress relief and sensory toys. Teaching children how to keep themselves in control in emotionally charged situations will help them enormously throughout their schooling and lives. When children feel great frustration, anger, sadness, or anxiety, they become confused and may be unsure of how to control their emotions. This also provides opportunities for diffusing a negative emotion or situation before it escalates. It is absolutely never a punishment.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
