Help me give my students more reasons to curl up with a good book to read. Students would love new comfy chairs, new leveled books to read, as well as alphabet punches and personal writing journals.
The students in my class are learning and growing in a small school of kindergarten through 5th-grade students. Students get excited about learning and take pride in their work. They are responsible and respectful of their classroom; they take ownership by caring for their materials as well as for each other.
The kindergarten students are quite eager and willing to work with any activities which inspire them to learn and grow.
They enjoy encouraging one another to accomplish new challenges. They are intrinsically motivated because they are excited to learn about their world!
My goal is to have every student feel empowered, encouraged, and accepted. If that is accomplished, then students are able to concentrate on developing independent learning skills. The students in my classroom are all working on individual goals and their instruction is differentiated to help accomplish those goals.
My Project
The kindergarten students in my classroom read 5 - 10 books daily. Leveled books for beginning readers are quite short, so the students go through them quickly. At a time when they are just starting to read, it is crucial that they have many books available to them at their level.
Students in kindergarten are learning to read so that as they get older, they can read to learn.
Kindergarten is a critical time to teach students to read; it is also important that they have books in their hands that motivate them to read. With a classroom of 20 students, it is my responsibility to provide them with books of interest. Students crave a variety of literary genres. I can help them find what interests them if I have many books at their reading level for them to enjoy.
During our reading block of time, students curl up in many places throughout the classroom and quietly enjoy their book boxes loaded full of books at their level. Because they are motivated, independent learners, they read many books every week. Most of the books are read several times before the book boxes are refilled. It is difficult to continue to get new leveled books into their hands for an entire year of learning.
