Cozy Kindergarten Carpet: The Heart of the Classroom!

My Students

I teach kindergarten in a Title I school in South Carolina. For many of my students kindergarten is their first school experience. Even though my students come from diverse backgrounds, we work and grow together as a family throughout the year. My favorite part of teaching kindergarten is their affection for each other and the adults that teach them. They are eager to please and want to do their best!

In our classroom we work to build community by growing and learning through our shared experiences and success!

I love the energy and enthusiasm my students bring to school each day! They are ready to learn and experience new things. They want to be independent and to do things for themselves! Together we celebrate our accomplishments!

My Project

My students need a clean, sturdy rug to serve as a gathering place for building community and during whole group learning time.

There are many important learning resources in my classroom, but none as vital as the community rug.

It is the central meeting place for us to begin and end our day. It is where we gather together for whole group instruction throughout the day. It is where we sing songs, practice motor skills, and work on learning new standards. It is where we learn each other’s names, share stories, and grow comfortable enough to participate.

The rug is where we become a family!

Often, school is the only consistent place that my children spend a significant amount of time. Many students split their time between separated parents, various grandparents, family friends, and sitters. Because of this, we spend a significant amount of time building community among the children.

We are in need of a new rug to replace ours that has been loved for many years! It was already a part of the classroom when I began teaching more than a decade ago. By getting a classroom rug, we will be able to come together in a comfortable space to build our classroom community. This feeling of safety helps to create an environment where students are successful and ready to learn!
