Cozy, Comfortable, and Organized!

My students need a large rug to sit, play, and read on.

My Students

Small children need to be able to stretch out and move during the day. Our classroom has a hard cold floor which is not conducive to floor activities!

My students are amazing young children with a passion for learning.

They come from high poverty homes and are English Language Learners. Our school district has been impacted by budget cuts in dramatic ways. The hardest for my students and me has been the class size reduction. I had 20 students in my class for the past 7 years and I now have 29. I was moved to my current school when our district closed the school where I taught. My new school does not have carpet. My students love to stretch out and read or play games on the floor. I found an old rug in an empty classroom before school started. I dragged it into my room and was dismayed to see all the dirt in it. I have vacuumed it many times, but it still leaves a trail of dirt when moved. It is literally falling apart. I often have the kids on the floor for a lesson and they are practically sitting on top of each other. The rug I am hoping to get would give each child their own place to sit so they can focus on learning.

My Project

I selected this particular rug because it is soft, colorful, and divided into enough sections that each child can have their own spot. My special needs kids will especially benefit from this rug, because they can use the lines around each action as a visual cue to remind them where to sit. I can see in my mind's eye my students stretched out on their tummies with a big book and reading with a friend. There will be room to build sky scrapers with pattern blocks and put together floor puzzles. Children will be able to focus on my lessons and read-alouds instead of worrying about touching their neighbor and being squished! I teach an after school literacy intervention class. This rug can be used for literacy games because of the sections on it and the alphabet border around the edges. At least half of our day is spent with at least some kids on the floor. This rug will make that experience so much better.

Please consider donating to this project.

This rug is sturdy and durable and will be used by children for many years to come. My students don't often get the chance at home to stretch out with a good book and concentrate only on that book. This rug will give them that opportunity. Most of my students don't have puzzles and board games at home. I want them to experience the joy of playing games with friends. Thank you so much for helping to bring a cozy place for kids to learn to my classroom.
