These students of mine are nothing short of amazing! They have been through so much in the short time they have been enrolled in school. When they were in 5th grade, our school flooded due to Hurricane Harvey. They had to attend school on another campus and keep up with their school work. Two years later, many of them flooded again during Hurricane Imelda. They missed one month of school at that time.
Once again they are having to adjust to another way of learning.
And boy have they stepped up to the plate, and all are hitting home runs! These kids love to learn. They have to bridge the gap from several years of interrupted learning. They are not going to disappoint anyone with their resilience and determination!
As a language arts teacher, I strive to create lifelong learners. I have been trying to encourage reading and writing every day while these kids are at home. They are living through a major historical event. I would like for them to have supplies to "Chronicle" their day to day events. No matter how mundane. Since their lives are boring I would like to be able to provide them a few supplies to help relieve that stress.
Since we left in such a hurry and had no idea that we would not return to school this school year there were many projects these students were not able to complete.
One of those projects would have been to write a letter of congratulations to their future self for graduating highschool. I do this each year and then deliver them to the high school the last grading period of their Senior year. They have already missed out on so much that I would like for them to have this opportunity.
The items I am asking for will brighten their day. Yes, we can Zoom and try to keep the learning going but these kids are so sad not seeing their friends. I would like to deliver them these few supplies and put a happy face on kids that are missing so much right now.
