COVID-19 Resources and Supports

Help me give my students resources (for school and distance learning) that will support their academic progress and social/emotional well-being as we still try to navigate through this pandemic.

My Students

The students at my school are an amazing group of kids who are chomping at the bit to learn all they can. They are so excited to be at school. Our school, comprised of K-5 students, is focusing on having a growth mindset.

Our kids have really taken the growth mindset idea of "the power of yet" to heart.

Our students already understand that mistakes and failures are parts of learning and help us grow. They welcome the challenges they're given because they understand that hard things help their brains grow!

This mindset is especially important right now as our students are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic as they work to grow and progress. The past year and a half we've seen our students lose momentum in their learning. We're seeing students with much more learning "holes" than ever before. In addition, we're seeing a lot of students with "holes" in their social skills, emotional coping capabilities, work skills, and perseverance. Due to the pandemic teachers are overstretched, overworked, burned out, and thus, are not able to give their students the focus and individualized attention they need. Teachers aren't able to do "catch-up teaching" in response to the pandemic.

My Project

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on so many tricky repercussions for our kids. Not only are students struggling and falling further and further behind academically, but it wears on everyone's social-emotional well-being, too. The pandemic has also given rise to a sensitive cultural and political climate that our kids are not shielded from; they feel and sense a lot of what's going on and it can cause stresses and anxieties.

The materials I am requesting will support kids' social-emotional learning and help them feel supported as they learn how to navigate through the continued effects of this pandemic.

I've asked for many books that will help me teach kids about inclusion, equity, culture celebration, hardship perseverance, growth mindset, etc. As I've seen a lot more cases of anxiety and other mental health issues arise from the pandemic, several of the materials I asked for, like the bouncy bands, puzzles, and STEM activities (PowerClix), will help calm and/or focus kids at school. The whiteboards and headphones will also be great to send home with the kids when we have distance learning days; I know for some families that school work resources like these and technology supports are limited. When the kids do online learning on the computer they can put the headphones on so they don't get distracted by surrounding noises/distractions at home and can actually hear their lessons. The whiteboards will also be great for them to work through math assignments and/or respond to the teacher during synchronous, live Zoom lessons; they can show on the camera what work they have on their whiteboards to give the teacher good feedback.
