My students are a diverse group of sweet, curious, and energetic kids. Most of them come from single-parent families who fall below the economic poverty line. They love to come to school every day and experience all the richness that our little school family affords. Many of them are being exposed to educational opportunities in our classroom that have not been shared at home. I hope to share new experiences with them and impart a love of learning that will follow them throughout life. By the end of first grade, I hope to transform the "I can't" statements into "I'll try my best!" statements.
We are all adjusting to a new way of living our lives. My students have had to learn how to work from a computer while learning to read.
Learning is still taking place, despite the hardships we face.
I would love to be able to provide some consistency to my students during this time of crisis.
The tabletop easel will provide me with a way to demonstrate lessons to students from my home. They are accustomed to seeing examples of my expectations before they are responsible for doing it themselves. Not having a whiteboard at home has made it challenging to give them the opportunity to really learn a skill in a way that is familiar to them. The easel will be useful in small-group once we transition back to the classroom. It will expand the options we have for learning in the regular setting.
Dry-erase markers are a must for use in a classroom! I use them to teach and students use them to learn. Prior to the change in setting, we were completely out of markers. We use them for everything. We use them in centers for Reading practice. We use them during whole-group Math instruction to demonstrate understanding and participate in lessons. We use them in small-group to master skills. I will use some of them to teach from home and will have plenty extra for use when we return to the classroom.
One thing that is making it very hard to provide quality instruction is the lack of books! All my materials are locked away in my classroom and libraries are closed. Having a selection of books to use for read alouds will help so much. Students love to listen to and see their teacher read a book to them.
