Help me give my students the basic supplies they need - such as dry erase markers, crayons, and construction paper - in order to participate in math, writing, and art activities in our classroom!
Our largest classroom wall is emblazoned with the words "You are Strong and Powerful." If you ask my first graders what it looks like to be strong and powerful they will tell you it means helping others, being kind, trying your best, and persevering. They will also lift up their arms and show you their muscles!
My students are building their math and reading skills, but are also learning about the power of curiosity, kindness, and diversity.
My kiddos represent 5 different home languages and neighborhoods characterized by low socio-economic status. They deserve my best effort, as they give theirs. As a first grade teacher, I never know what I might say in the course of the day (such as "you don't need to wash the bathroom mirror, during math time") or even what I might do (perhaps spend a whole morning holding a student's hand so he doesn't run away) but every day, I can count on my feisty, diverse, kind, strong, and powerful students to inspire me to do it all again tomorrow.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I haven't had the chance to build up my supply of classroom basics. As first graders, my students are just beginning to form their opinions and ideas about school and learning.
This project will give me the opportunity to provide for some of the basic educational needs of my students and give them the tools they need to feel successful and prepared for every day tasks.
My students come from low-income families and neighborhoods, and thus often rely on me to provide pencils, markers, and crayons. These things can add up quickly! In addition, dry erase markers to help kids practice math problems, glue and scissors for art projects, and tablet paper for anchor charts will help our classroom run smoother, when each student has easy access to the tools they need.
Funding this project will create a well-stocked classroom for this class of young learners and many classes after.
