This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine what it is like to have 28 amazing students and only two digital timers that all of them want to use? When my students want to practice their timed reading, they end up having keep track on the classroom wall clock because I do not have enough timers to go around.
I teach an outstanding group of fourth graders in a high-needs community.
In the beginning of the year, I had many students who were struggling in reading. Now they are all becoming confident, successful readers! I introduced timed readings to help with their reading fluency. Research has shown that multiple timed readings of the same passage can help improve reading fluency. They are given a district required timed reading assessment that focuses on how many words they can read in a minute. Through timed readings they have the opportunity to practice their reading in groups, with partners and independently. The students love to do timed readings.
My Project
I had bought fifteen timers at the dollar store in the beginning of the year and now all except two are broken. What did I expect for a dollar! The sad thing is the last two are just hanging on. I call them the "Lucky Timers" because they are lucky to still be working. My students have made great progress in their reading fluency ever since they started timed readings. On top of their fluency improving so has their comprehension. They get so excited when they are able to use one of the "Lucky Timers". I would like to have enough reliable timers so that all my partner reading buddies could have one to share.
Your generous donation will make it possible for my fantastic fourth graders to continuing soaring in their reading fluency and comprehension!
They are motivated students who need amazing people like you to help support them. Thank you!
