I teach an outstanding group of fourth graders in a high-needs community. In the beginning of the year, I had many students who were struggling in reading. Now they are all becoming confident, successful readers! I introduced timed readings to help with their reading fluency. Research has shown that multiple timed readings of the same passage can help improve reading fluency. They are given a district required timed reading assessment that focuses on how many words they can read in a minute. Through timed readings they have the opportunity to practice their reading in groups, with partners and independently. The students love to do timed readings.
