Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

It is towards the end of the school year and testing season is upon us! On top of the burnout of our students and staff, we battle the anxiety that comes along with testing. We start a countdown for everyone and encourage our students daily to continue to push through and finish strong. Sometimes, the light at the end of the tunnel is dim, especially for our students who do not look forward to the summer time. Due to demographics and outside circumstances, many of our students prefer to hang out at school functions as much as possible.

Every 9 weeks we have what is called a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) celebration for our students.

We provide students with drinks, snacks and earned free time with a planned activity during the school day. The purpose of this system is to reward students who have maintained no minors or office referrals for that quarter. The system is also used to encourage other students to follow our P.B.I.S. rules: 1) Work with a purpose, 2)Act respectfully and 3) Yearn for excellence.

The materials on this wishlist will be used for our end of the year celebration with the theme of "Count Down to Cooling Down Water Day". This will reward our students for their positive behavior and encourage other students by showing them what they can earn. Hosting these celebrations helps cut down our discipline report numbers more and more each year. We do not have many resources "North of the River" as they call us being on the outskirts of the main city, but we try to give our students the most memorable experiences as much as we can. As a third year counselor, I learned that a little goes a long way!
