I am a first-year kindergarten teacher on the west side of Chicago at Jacob Beidler elementary. I moved into a classroom that was inhabited by ONE teacher for over 30 years, then for one year by a series of substitutes. I was the lucky one to unmask and organize all of the "stuff" that was in complete disarray. Many pieces were missing to puzzles, games, and educational toys. Therefore, many of the treasured possessions that once filled the classroom ended up useless. I was left to sort through the piles (they looked more like mountains to me, but I'm only 5'1") of stuff, and I was left with a minimal amount of math manipulatives and educational materials. My students are struggling with math and I have very little (outside of my head and a pen and paper) to aide them in successfully mastering of number recognition, counting numbers, one-to-one correspondence, sorting, patterning, and telling time. I would like to provide my students with materials to help them learn math. The worksheets and teacher's edition of our math series seems to be insufficient for my students. They would certainly benefit from some math manipulatives. My students would use these items when they have free time and it would certainly help me to better instruct them in math. "We learn best by doing." I want my children to be able to mainpulate tangible items, not just their pencil on a worksheet. Thank you for your consideration.
