Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I campus located in Southeast Dallas! Our campus primarily serves the Hispanic and African American populations.
Ninety-six percent of our students are considered to be in poverty and sixty-three percent are considered at risk.
Most participate in the free and reduced lunch and breakfast in the classroom. Despite their circumstantial difficulties our students come eager to learn in a warm, welcoming, learning conduced environment.
Many, if not most of my students home life consist of small spaces with limited resources that are conducive to learning. Many of my students share living spaces with multiple family members or lack consistent parental presence. In addition most have very few "nice" things of their own and many are not taught proper emotional and social norms.
My Project
In our classroom/office we are also hoping to get two comfortable desk chairs for the times we have to sit at our desk to complete paperwork, answer emails or call community stakeholders.
I am further requesting assistance with the following items to help create a warm welcoming environment for all our students at CE.
As the counselor of my school (plus my co-counselor) one of the items we ensure all students is confidentiality. For this we are requesting a safe and secure box where they can submit their request to see us without the fear that another student will read their request.
Finally we will have a calming corner in the room where students who come to visit us can sit and read a book dealing with their emotions or complete a calming activity before siting with us (counselors) to discuss what the issue may be. For this corner we would like to have comfortable seating for them in the form of bean bags.
