My students need sensory support services such as pompom balls, finger fidgets and weighted pillows to help calm and focus themselves to be better prepared for learning and interacting with others in the classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Rusheon is a Title I school and we serve students and families that fall in the lower end of the socio-economic class. Our students are sometimes faced with many life changing obstacles in their home life.
The counseling office would like to be able to better serve our students with a warm, comfortable, and inviting group space to encourage social and emotional growth to better prepare themselves for a positive future.
Our hope is that we can encourage our future generation to conquer negative thinking, anger and frustration to better understand that their thought habits are holding them back from being leaders in our community. With additional funding we could better serve our students and families.
We currently have been given a space to allow for small group discussions but do not have a budget to provide the wonderful space our students deserve.
My Project
Many of our students struggle with anxiety and the feeling of being overwhelmed due to struggles in their home-life. Our goal is to provide a space for our middle school students to feel safe and be able to open up and share their experiences and grow as individuals both socially and emotionally.
We believe through individual and group counseling in a safe, quiet and calm Counselor Corner that we can better serve our students to be more productive in the classroom.
These sensory balls, weighted pillows, journaling/art therapy supplies will help us better serve our students' needs. The Counselor Corner will be open to all regular ed and special ed students.
