Counselor Care Center: Providing Health Essentials to Improve Attendance

My Project

Over 85% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, meaning their families oftentimes cannot afford the essentials that have been priced the same as "luxuries". These essentials include toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, and, frequently, deodorant. When adolescents, who are physically going through the joyous stages of puberty, do not have access to these items they come to school in fear of being bullied for their less-than-pleasant aromas or their hair not being done. Sometimes they even are bullied for such things. Other issues students fear being bullied for involve those related to the embarrassment of having their periods at school. And though half of our global population has one and it is definitely not a luxury, period products are certainly treated, priced, and taxed like luxuries, making them very expensive.

We, as counselors and as a school, are doing everything in our power to provide ample supplies to our students so that no child feels that they may need to miss a day of school due to a lack of hygiene or period supplies.

That is why I am requesting assistance to restock our newly created Counselor Care Center with the items that our students have been highly requesting and regularly using. This project will help provide deodorant and lotion for all students, as well as small discrete cosmetic bags, a variety of feminine pads and products, and travel hand sanitizer for female students to create period purses when they are in need. There are also some overnight pads, in case they need to take home thicker pads to help provide them a better night's sleep while they're on their period.
