This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Good morning,

My job as school social worker allows me to work with the most amazing students.

Despite obstacles in their lives, they manage to overcame and push through. The Big Bean Bag chair and coloring pages with help them with learning calming techniques that can transfer to all areas of life. My space is set up to help relax (.warm lighting, oil diffuser and inspirational wall art) and calm the mind. The chair will be used as a tool to help the students with self regulation skills and emotional wellbeing. It will also serve as a soft safe space to have difficult conversations.

The goals for this project are to add another layer of comfort, to introduce the state of relaxation and how that affects the mood. These items will help to continue to engage the students social emotional learning and coping skill techniques. This is especially helpful to the special needs population and children with sensory needs. I also plan to incorporate some meditation and relaxation techniques in the counseling sessions. These items will be gladly incorporated into the decor of my room and used to benefit not only the students but the staff members as well.

Being a social worker for the entire school, allows me me to work with many students from across the city. The one thing that they mostly have in common and that I enjoy, is how easily they feel safe and comfortable in my office. I feel the most special moments are when they come in and share happy moments in their life or use my office as a safe place to calm down or grab a snack. I love teaching them coping and social skills and ways to incorporate self care as a daily habit. The students deserve a soft seat!
