Instead of only reading about the past, students are actively building it—researching important historical sites, designing models, and explaining why those places matter. This hands-on approach helps students better understand complex ideas like government, conflict, and social change because they can see and create connections, not just memorize facts.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is the opportunity to design and build something of their own. They take pride in turning simple materials into detailed models of places like the U.S. Capitol, Fort McHenry, or Independence Hall. Many students who don't usually see themselves as \"strong\" in traditional academics have really come alive during this project—especially those who enjoy building, drawing, or working with their hands. They are asking deeper questions, collaborating more, and showing a level of engagement that is hard to achieve through worksheets alone.\r\n\r\nThis project has been especially powerful during our Black History work. Students researching sites like Fort Mose and the African Meeting House have taken great pride in telling stories that are often overlooked. As part of our school's Black History Museum, students used their models to create handmade souvenirs—like mini replicas and keepsakes—to share with visitors. This gave them a real audience and helped them see themselves as historians and storytellers whose work matters.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project has helped students build confidence, think critically, and connect history to the present in a meaningful way. While donors may be familiar with 3D printing at home, in our classroom it has become a powerful learning tool. Students are using it to turn abstract ideas into real, physical objects. They've learned how to design in Tinkercad, think through measurements and structure, and troubleshoot when designs don't print as expected. This process has strengthened their problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and persistence—skills that directly connect to real-world STEM and manufacturing careers.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students the most is seeing their ideas come to life. They have designed and printed custom magnets, original artwork, and small trinkets for our Black History Museum, helping them connect creativity with cultural learning. Some students even designed their own fidgets, which quickly became a favorite because they created something personal and useful. Watching their designs go from a screen to something they can hold has been incredibly motivating.\r\n\r\nA few students who don't always shine in traditional academic settings have truly come alive with this technology. These students took the lead in learning the design process, helping peers, and refining their projects over multiple attempts. Their confidence has grown as they've realized they can succeed in a hands-on, creative environment.\r\n\r\nBecause of this excitement, we were able to start a 3D printing club where students continue exploring design beyond the classroom. In this space, they are creating their own products, experimenting with new ideas, and beginning to see themselves as engineers and creators.\r\n\r\nThis project has done more than introduce a new tool—it has opened doors. Our students now see that they have the ability to design, build, and contribute to the world around them. After more than 26 years as an educator, this was my very first DonorsChoose project, and I truly did not know what to expect. What I have witnessed since receiving these materials has been nothing short of inspiring. \r\n\r\nAs my students entered my learning space for the first time after the calming space was set up, I intentionally said very little. I wanted to see their natural reactions. Almost immediately, they were drawn to the area. Without directions or explanations, they gravitated toward the breathing balls, stress balls, and the other calming tools. I watched quietly as middle school students, who often carry the weight of growing expectation and emotions, allowed themselves to simply enjoy the moment. It was as of they had permission to be carefree again, even if just for a few minutes. \r\n\r\nThe calming corner you helped create has quickly become one of the meaningful parts of our space. The diffuser adds a gentle sense of calm, while the colorful positive themed posters reinforce messages of resilience, growth, and self-worth. These phrases are more than decorations but are daily affirmations that students are beginning to internalize. \r\n\r\nThe variety of tools, including fidgets, sensory items, and games, has given students constructive ways to manage their emotions. I have already seen students independently choose to use these resources when they feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or anxious. Instead of reacting impulsively, they are learning to regulate themselves, reflect, and return to class activities with a clearer mindset. These are lifelong skills that will benefit them far beyond the walls of any classroom. \r\n\r\nWhat has been especially powerful is seeing how this space supports a wide range of learner. Some students use the calming corner as a quiet place to reset, while others engage with the hands-on materials to help them focus. The games and shared resources have also encouraged positive peer interactions, cooperation, and communication. Students are not only learning how to manage themselves, but also how to support one another. \r\n\r\nYour support and donations have transformed the overall atmosphere of our learning space. It is a safe, welcoming environment where students feel seen, supported and understood. In a time when many young people face increasing stress and emotional challenges, having access to a space like this is truly invaluable. \r\n\r\nThank you for seeing my students and making such a lasting and meaningful difference.","fullyFundedDate":1767208604136,"projectUrl":"project/reset-and-recharge/9868633/","projectTitle":"Reset and Recharge","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Spencer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5032191"},{"teacherId":5806247,"projectId":9640859,"letterContent":"Thank you for your contributions to my project.
