My Students

Do you remember sitting by your mother's side while listening to her read your favorite story? I remember my mother bringing the stories to life with the expressions with which she read and how that instilled in me the love for reading. I want to give the same experience to my students.

I work with 24 incredible 3rd and 4th graders in a combination classroom.

They are inquisitive, enthusiastic and eager learners with different abilities and varied socioeconomic backgrounds. One of their favorite time of the day is the read aloud time and often times they beg me to finish a chapter or to move on to the next chapter. Sadly, due to time constraints, I am not able to read aloud to them as much as they want and deserve. Many of my students' parents work long hours and they don't speak English fluently or at all. For some of them, the only opportunity to be exposed to models of fluent reading is at school. Currently, I only have one CD player with a few audio books to be shared by 24 students, which is not enough to address the needs of my students.

My Project

I am requesting 6 portable CD players and 8 pairs of headphones in order for students to access audio books. Since most of my students are Language Learners, chapter books are often too intimidating to tackle alone. The unfamiliar vocabulary and difficulty with pronunciation make the task of reading very intimidating. However, with the support of an audio CD, the students will feel more confident and successful.
