Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students and I have brainstormed ways to make newcomer students feel welcomed and included, and ways to help them develop their English with fun, engaging, hands-on activities.
Teaching language through drama and reader's theater allows newcomers to practice speaking English in a fun way with their peers.
We need props like dress-up clothing, such as astronaut costumes and wizard wands to use for drama, reader's theater, and role-playing to develop their English language during our Astronomy unit and Earth Study. My students will serve as models so our newcomers can connect language with gestures, using their bodies to promote total physical response (TPR), an effective English language teaching strategy. My students love science and agree that by including hands-on science lessons, our newcomer students will feel motivated to participate. I also added supplies like a colored pencil sharpener, staples, and a tape dispenser for our centers. We will also be planting seeds for Earth Day for our Mother's Day project.
