Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of the best written and most up to date books are awarded Caldecott Medals or recognition of achievement by Coretta Scott King. I would love for my students to have the opportunity to read some of these non-fiction, historical, and multi-cultural depictions of people and events.
I teach second grade in an urban public school.
The district is entirely made up of African American and Hispanic students who need more images of themselves portrayed in the books they read. The school does not provide assistant with building classroom libraries, although we are required to have one. As I look for timeless books that will speak to the variety of readers I have found some truly inspiring books in these award winning collections.
My Project
I have picked a little over twenty of some of the most colorful and impressive picture books. I have found many in hardback and can't wait to see how the students will be engaged. The books include subject matter like the lost boys of Sudan, the Civil Right Movement, biographies, and poetry. These texts can be used as a starting point for writing narratives or reflections. I could also intertwine them into lessons on history and seasons like Black History Month in February. These books are a treasure we would be fortunate to receive.
I hope by providing these beautiful pieces of literature students will come to learn more about their history and the roles many people of color have had in forming our country.
I want to instill pride through an awareness and recognition that there is a wide range of stories to be read.
