My Students

Some of the best childhood memories are those of helping others in our families, neighborhoods, and communities. Helping others helps build character and relationships, while filling a need in the community. Families struggle to earn a living for their families, and we need to help each other.

Our students are fifth graders at an elementary school with a diverse and growing population, with over 60% (and growing) identified as free and reduced price lunch status.

Students participate in a Core Value character ethics program at school, although emphasis on this has waned in recent years. We would like to revitalize this program by improving the role of 5th graders in our building as models of character and behavior. This will begin with community service opportunities for the 5th graders, including cleaning up community parks and areas. We hope to increase overall student positive behavior, motivation, and achievement, as well as impact the character of individual students.

My Project

We hope for students to begin tracking community service hours cleaning up community parks and areas, perhaps expanding to additional service opportunities. To begin this project, we are requesting cleaning and safety supplies. We will need trash bags, brooms, and dust pans. Also needed are gloves and face masks for safety. Finally, we are also requesting clipboards and pens so that supervisors can establish sign in and sign out procedures to help keep track of service hours. Students will work in small-large teams with supervisors. We are hoping to have teachers and parents service as supervisors, with appropriate background checks, with the support of our school PTA. We hope for our students to learn the value of serving in their communities, helping other, developing responsibility and pride in your work. Hopefully, this project will help improve overall behavior and success of fifth grade students and help them to become true leaders in our building for all of the students.

Students today face numerous barriers.

We hope to provide fifth grade students with an opportunity to serve their community and build character to become leaders in their elementary school. Please help us to get this project off the ground by funding the supplies to begin the first phase of the service project, cleaning our community parks and public areas.
