Coraline visits the Sixth Grade

My students need 18 copies of the graphic novel "Coraline", by Neil Gaiman.

With the intent of encouraging resistant readers, I would like to give my sixth grade literature class the opportunity to experience reading a graphic novel. Since funding in our district is very limited, the resources are not available within the school budget to purchase a set. By allowing the students to experience a different genre, such as graphic novels, their knowledge base expands and they have a broader range of literature from which to choose. This genre is new to our school, and I see it as an opportunity to reach out to readers who are resistant to reading and need an extra nudge to be motivated to read. It is the goal of this literary experience that it serve as a springboard for future reading. After reading the graphic novel Coraline as a class, it is hoped that a spark of enthusiasm will ignite the readers to step up to reading the text version of Coraline or other novels with similar story lines. When students are motivated to read, their enthusiasm is contagious. By giving students a new type of novel to read, I hope to see contagious readers take over the sixth grade!
