Mrs. Amstutz from Saint Petersburg FL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 30 books called, Copper Sun, in order to read together as a class and learn about slavery.

Students in the U.S enjoy lots of freedoms. Have these privileges always been available? What has been done to insure you have these freedoms? How does this make you feel about the privileges you enjoy?
Seventy-Eight percent of our students are economically disadvantaged who attend an urban school in Florida.
Even though our students enjoy attending school and learning, many of them are struggling readers who need extra encouragement to read novels. They are very excited to read the novel, "Copper Sun" by Sharon Draper as a class to learn about the slave trade.
The 30 "Copper Sun" books that will be used to teach the students about slavery and the slave trade from Africa to the Florida coast will enhance the experience of learning about the slave trade through a historical fiction book. They will also draw parallels between the historical fiction story and primary and secondary sources which document the events of the slavery era. In addition, as a culminating activity the students will go on a field trip to St. Augustine, in order to visit some of the places that were described in the book.
After reading this book, the students will have the opportunity to attend an overnight field trip to St.
Augustine, Fort Mose, and the Castillo de San Marcos Fort, which will give students a visual representation to positively impact their involvement with the reading. This will be an amazing opportunity for our economically disadvantaged students. They will have the opportunity to view the historical sites discussed by characters in the book, and they will see for themselves the land formations.
