Help me give my students a space to take ownership of their emotional and mental wellness in a healthy and productive way. They need stress balls, fidget toys, and glitter wands.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in what's considered the highest poverty and crime rate and home to the lowest income families of Rochester, NY. More than 50% of the children of our children live in poverty. Our school's commitment has three focuses. First, we are committed to having five times as many students attend and graduate college compared to other local schools. Second, we are determined to have students become proficient within four years in both reading and math. Our third commitment is for all our scholars to give back by uplifting their communities forever.
While this is not an easy task, our persistence for excellence is the driving force of success.
In the years to come, our students will actively play a significant role in their communities as we thrive for a better world.
My students face challenges from the very moment they wake up in the morning. I work with special needs students with disabilities ranging from emotional/behavioral disabilities, learning disabilities and autism. Despite the challenges they face daily, these are students are unique and wonderful in their own ways. My goal is to create a positive learning environment where they feel safe and motivated to learn every day.
My Project
As teachers, it is our duty to not only develop our students' academic growth, but their social and emotional growth as well. Our students need a cozy corner in which they may begin practicing mindfulness and the self-regulation of their own feelings and thoughts. When a student is feeling stressed, frustrated, angry, or sad, they will voluntarily go to the cool down corner. In the cool down corner, we have asked for silent sensory and fidget items to help students center themselves and come back to the academic instruction as quickly as possible in a healthy and productive way. We have asked for sand timers so that students may choose a length of time for their cool down and rejoin our class when they feel ready.
Students will have a variety of fidgets to choose from, such as glitter jars, stress balls, and other anti-anxiety tools.
These cool down corners pair directly with our weekly Social Emotional Learning blocks that teach our students to find ways to self-regulate and develop their emotional intelligence.
