As teachers, it is our duty to not only develop our students' academic growth, but their social and emotional growth as well. Our students need a cozy corner in which they may begin practicing mindfulness and the self-regulation of their own feelings and thoughts. When a student is feeling stressed, frustrated, angry, or sad, they will voluntarily go to the cool down corner. In the cool down corner, we have asked for silent sensory and fidget items to help students center themselves and come back to the academic instruction as quickly as possible in a healthy and productive way. We have asked for sand timers so that students may choose a length of time for their cool down and rejoin our class when they feel ready. Students will have a variety of fidgets to choose from, such as glitter jars, stress balls, and other anti-anxiety tools. These cool down corners pair directly with our weekly Social Emotional Learning blocks that teach our students to find ways to self-regulate and develop their emotional intelligence. We want our students to take ownership of their emotional and mental wellness in a healthy and productive way. Please help us make our classroom complete!
