Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project will benefit 18 third graders who are constantly on the go. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, I serve students who are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students come from families that face socioeconomic challenges as well as parents who speak a different language. These challenges sometimes make learning difficult as their minds are not always on what is being taught in school. Providing my students with a safe and calm place to go when they need it will help my students express their emotions as well as provide them with an opportunity to take care of themselves as needed.
My Project
Concern for the mental health of students has increased in the last few years. There are many children who are coming to school with underlying issues as well as a diagnosis of a mental health issue. These students are put in regular education classrooms, but don't always have an outlet.
I am looking at creating a "calming corner' in my classroom as a safe place where my students can go to "cool off" or just when they need to step away from the rigorous classroom structure.
I want to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all of my students to learn in. I believe that helping all of my students focus on their mental health will allow me to better reach the needs of all my students. If they know that there's a place that they can go to release some of their energy, I believe this will have a direct impact on their willingness to learn.
