Cool, Calm, and Flexible

My Students

Although our school is in a rural community, we have a diverse population of students. Many of our students are fairly new to our country and are just learning to speak English. Some of our students live in poverty while others come from wealthier homes.

In the ELA classroom, our diversity becomes one of our greatest strengths.

Because students have had a variety of different life experiences, we are able to hear many different perspectives on the texts we read, and how different people can relate to them.

My Project

Sometimes our traditional classrooms are not the best learning environment for kids. Middle school students need variety and the ability to move around. Being limited to standard desks doesn't give students that option. Having an interior classroom adds even more challenges. Having no windows gives us no natural lighting, so we must rely on the harsh florescent lights that sometimes gives kids headaches. Being in a windowless room also restricts us from having fresh air in the room, so we are left with air that is stale and often very very warm.

I want to transform my classroom into a place where students can stay cool, stay calm, and have options with flexible seating.

We need a fan to keep the air moving and stay cool, as even in the winter my classroom gets hot.

We need a lamp and light covers to eliminate the harsh lighting the florescent lights provide, and to create a warm and calming environment.

Finally, we need flexible seating options. We need stadium chairs, so students can sit on the floor as they work; standing desks and stools, so students have the option to work standing up; and a power strip, so students are able to plug in their laptops from any part of the classroom.
