My Students
I have six fantastic classrooms of eager and excited eleven and twelve year olds. They come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. In my classrooms I have everything from gifted learners to English Language Learners and also students with special learning needs.
Even with their diverse backgrounds and abilities, my students are kind to each other and happy to be at school.
They enjoy learning and are a joy to be around.
We are located in a suburban, middle class neighborhood at a school which is has a diverse population of students, many of them receiving free and reduced lunch. Roughly half of our students come from low income households.
My Project
A welcoming and comfortable classroom environment is something often overlooked by many when considering what students will need to learn and be successful. When I gave my students a survey this year I was shocked at how many of them expressed that they were more able to learn because of the environment in our classroom. They love the flexible seating and happy colors as well as the organization throughout.
Filters for the florescent lights will greatly ease the harsh strain it can put on students' eyes.
The students are frequently on laptops, so if we can minimize the strain to their eyes in any way this would be beneficial. Plants also contribute to the classroom environment by creating oxygen and helping to purify the air while the fish creates a calming effect. We all know that a middle school can often be a bad-smelling place, so diffusing essential oils can also calm students, make them more focused and create an environment that smells good without pumping chemicals into the air.
