Cooking Up a Good Book

My reading program need 32 illustrated titles, including works by Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss and P.D. Eastman.

I teach in the Student Support Center. This room houses full-time Emotionally Disabled students as well as other special needs students who have behaviors that prevent them from participating in a general education setting. In addition to our full-time students, we have approximately 30 general education students who are in and out through out the day taking a sensory break. My students need the books that accompany the "Hands-on-Reading" program. My students need literature in order to experience the joy of reading. We utilize the "Hands-On-Reading" program to enhance the reading experience. This program is designed to develop expressive language and reading comprehension in special needs children either verbally or through the use of a communication device. Each book has cooking, craft, language development and reading comprehension activities which correlate to Indiana state standards

Some our students have limited verbal and expressive language. Most of our students are below grade level in all academic areas. Several of our students are in need of large amounts of attention.

Each book has cooking, craft, language development and reading comprehension activities which correlate to Indiana state standards. For example when reading When You Give A Pig A Pancake the students followed a visual recipe to make pancakes. These are also life skill lessons for students since they are involved in the preparation and the clean up.
