Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I school that has limited access to funding and supplies. Each year, I spend my money on items that will improve my students’ learning. I strive to make my classroom a space that never feels void of funding and feels just as full and enriched as a school in any other socioeconomic area. Almost all of my students have endured some type of trauma or are living in poverty, so I make every effort to make our classroom a safe and fun space.

Regardless of circumstance, my babies come to school each day filled with hope and excitement.

We are an extremely diverse school and I want that to be represented in our classroom. Our students should not be given less of an education or less of a chance than students with more resources and more money floating around their schools. Myself and the entire team at P. S. work extra hard every day to ensure that our students get the materials that we need to go above and beyond in our classrooms to ensure equity across our district.

My Project

Other campuses in our district have enough funds to create cooking classrooms in their Pre-K programs; however, with the overwhelming needs of our campus being social and emotional learning, providing basic essentials to our families, and purchasing school supplies for our kids that can't afford them, there isn't money left in the budget to enrich our Pre-K program the way that other campuses are able to.

My goal is to create a classroom that feels equitable and doesn't exclude my students from experiences simply because of what part of town they can afford to live in.

I've been able to provide multicultural materials that allowed my students to experience texts, crayons, markers, and toys that reflect their skin tone and their experience. However, my students are still missing out on an experience that others in the district experience, simply because of their address. I want my students to both feel represented AND to be given the same experiences as any other 4 year old in the district.

Teachers on my campus speak of their previous, more wealthy, campuses where students longed for Fun Fridays where they got to cook and create meals that tied into lessons and broadened their horizons. They could read The Little Red Hen and help each other bake the bread to really get the message in with all of the kids. They could read aloud Pumpkin Soup and then make it while talking and learning all about friendship. The students on the other side of town were making lifelong memories that my students can't afford. Our campus has an amazing program, Brighter Bites, that delivers fresh produce to our families and we would love to be able to cook and try the produce to encourage healthy eating in our students with this cookware.
