Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Last school year, 2020-2021, our staff identified 3,335 homeless students. This is 37% of our district! All of our students automatically qualify for free or reduced-price lunch due to the economic status of our community.

Many of our parents are employed as field workers, where paychecks can be small or sporadic, especially in winter when there is not as much work.

More than half of my class speaks English as their second language, and some have special needs. With that being said, they all love to come to school and want to learn. They deserve all the resources we can give to help them to be successful in school.

My Project

Who doesn't like to eat? I know my kindergarten students sure do! These students come into my classroom with a variety of home and life experiences. Some students come in with a basic understanding of food and nutrition, but others have very little experience with eating or preparing healthy foods.

I would like to share my love of cooking and trying new foods with my students that may not have the opportunities to experience this at home.

When kids are invested in preparing different new foods, they are more willing to try something that they made for themselves. Cooking offers the opportunity to develop language development by linking it to all other areas, including mathematics, science, social studies, arts, and literacy. This is done by encouraging children to talk about what they are doing, counting, and watching materials change color, texture, and medium. Students benefit in social-emotional development with hands-on cooking, when following recipes, it helps children develop confidence and independence. Cooking also helps students follow directions and develop problem-solving skills. I'm also asking for an indoor hydroponic garden to grow some herbs to use in our cooking.

Thank you for your support.
