I am a third grade teacher (for 19 years) in an inner-city school located in the highest crime district in our city. The children in our school come from poverty-stricken circumstances and have missed out on opportunities that most of us take for granted. I try to enrich their lives as much as possible while encouraging good behavior and character development through positive reinforcement. Children love receiving candy as a reward...but I'm not a fan of that. In trying to come up with rewards that excite the students and also provide meaningful educational support, I've hit upon a winning idea...Cooking in the Classroom. The third grade Standard Course of Study in NC lends itself well to activities involving cooking. Stricter guidelines set by our county's Child Nutrition Department have extinguished opportunities for our children to participate in cooking activities. Therefore, I would like to request two cookware items that I could use with my students to prepare and enjoy foods in the classroom. With these items available right in our room, we could incorporate what we are learning in math, reading, social studies, etc. with the real-life experience of preparing food right there in the room. And what motivation! Adding fractions, measuring, studying volume, making change, recording temperature, figuring elapsed time, studying other cultures (and on and on) is much more fun when you are actively involved...not to mention getting to taste the results! Requesting: Electric skillet, Slow cooker.
