My Students
Our school district's early childhood program provides quality preschool experiences and specialized services to three and four year olds who have been identified as having special needs, who qualify for Head Start or the Colorado Preschool Program (which both serve low income and at-risk students), or who enroll on a tuition basis. The elementary school where our classroom is located is identified as a Title I school, and it is where many of our students will be attending kindergarten. In our classroom, we feed students breakfast, lunch, and snack, and also have additional food on hand for students who get hungry in between those meals.
The majority of the students in our classroom are either identified as having special needs or come from low-income families and meet other factors that put them at risk for school failure.
Additionally, some students in our classroom are food insecure and participate in a program sponsored by United Way called Kids Pack, which sends home bags of food with students at the end of each week so that they will have additional food over the weekend.
My Project
We received a Donors Choose donation of an assortment of small appliances and gadgets last year and were able to make cooking a regular part of our routine. This year we cook at least once (but usually two or three times) a month. We have parent volunteers in both our morning and afternoon classes that help us on these days. With all of the cooking that we've been doing, we have realized that we could use a few more kitchen items to help us round out our cooking supplies.
This year we have made treats that connect to the holiday that we're celebrating, the book that we're reading that week, or even the letter that the kids are learning.
The children have made berry smoothies when we read Jamberry, carrot salad when we were learning the letter C, and gingerbread men at Christmas time. While making these and other recipes, I've realized that we still need more cookie sheets, silicone mats, and muffin tins for our class toaster oven, a cheese grater, an electric hand mixer, and ice cream scoopers to more easily scoop out dough and batter.
We use our cooking projects to help the kids learn about healthy eating, measuring, predicting, and to help foster kindness and community in our classroom.
