Both I and the lead teacher in the classroom are avid cooks and healthy eaters, and we are very interested in passing on our passions in these areas to our students. Last school year, we cooked two times in the classroom, making smoothies and pizza with homemade crust and sauce, which the students loved. This year, we are planning on cooking once a week. Rather than bringing our own supplies from home each time we cook, we would love to have a classroom set of small appliances, bowls, and utensils. When students cook they are using skills in literacy, math, and science in a practical and hands-on way. They use literacy skills to read the recipe and follow the sequence of steps. They use math skills to measure and begin learning about fractions. They also use science skills as they predict what will happen when ingredients are mixed and observe the changes that occur to the food as it cooks. And as an added benefit, they may be encouraged to try new fruits and vegetables.
