Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The moment my students walk through my classroom door, they are ready to get to work. I say, "Are you ready to rock?" and they respond with, "Ready to roll!" I expect nothing but the best from them, and I strive to be the best teacher and provide the best classroom environment I can.
My school serves Latino, Polynesian, and African-American students who live in deep poverty.
These are amazing students, full of life and character, who deserve nothing but the best. Most live in unfortunate situations at home; therefore, the classroom must be anything but unfortunate. I strive to make sure my students have all that they need to be successful in their academics.
My Project
Pancakes. Quesadillas. Grilled cheese. French toast. Fries. What do these foods have in common? Well, they are all very yummy foods that all kids love but can be super unhealthy when bought ready made off of the shelf, full of preservatives, sugar, and simple carbohydrates. Our children deserve better than this!
There are many recipes for healthy and nutritious, super delicious foods such as pancakes, grilled cheese, fries, and best of all, are very kid friendly, that are available in books and the internet, waiting to be exposed to children.
It is my goal to have monthly cooking demos for my students that require just a few easily accessible, healthy ingredients that will have them asking for more. Take pancakes, for instance. A simple recipe for healthy, yet yummy banana oat pancakes requires rolled oat flour, mashed bananas, a tiny bit of vanilla extract, a couple of eggs, and ground cinnamon. This yields very delicious banana oat pancakes. They could also add some chopped walnuts for more protein if desired.
Partner with me and help me enlighten my students about the benefits of eating healthy and how simple it can be to switch out the yummy unhealthy foods for healthy foods, without sacrificing the yumminess.
