My students all live in a rural area of Idaho, and most families have a garden, and this area has almost every field used for growing potatoes, corn, and other vegetables.
Students are taking a brand new course that is a Capstone Culinary course where they decide on and prepare affordable snacks for the new school nutritional break, offer a $3 lunch once a week for teachers, cater special school events, and train and enter FCCLA state culinary competitions.
We just won a contest open to all of the Idaho FCCLA programs through our proposal and bidding process to cater an Idaho Hunger Summit Task Force reception for 40 people who work to make food available to needy families in Idaho. We are making six different appetizers for their event.
This class is making food for the new nutritional break that happens from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. Hungry students buy food/snacks during this time when they need nourishment to do a better job in the classroom. We want to provide an affordable, healthy snack option that entices the students from the vending machines to our kitchen.
My Project
Students clean dishes in a shallow kitchen sink, and they need a deep stainless steel sink and sprayer in order to get the dishes ready to put into the dishwasher. The students are catering events for teachers and administrators, and need catering equipment such as chafing dishes to help prepare them for their future.
The kitchen has a dishwasher, so this deep sink and sprayer will aid them prepping the items to be loaded into the dishwasher.
We need the chafing dishes for catering, and we want to learn how to make pasta with this pasta making attachment to use with our kitchen aid mixers.
These students are learning to follow through with the whole cooking process from planning, estimating the cost and materials needed, and the responsibility of cleaning up the kitchen as well. With this new sink and sprayer, the students will be able to devote more time to the creative side of cooking as well as the other aspects rather than spending time trying to get dishes clean in a shallow sink. This will make the cleaning up process more effective and efficient. The pasta attachments will help the students to learn to make pasta and gain the experience to decide in the cooking process how much pasta made from scratch makes the final food product even better. The catering equipment will give the students a chance to keep the food warm that they prepare for upcoming events for students, teachers, and other customers.
