My students need next level kitchen tools from chef's knives to a versatile Instapot and an herb garden kit to a sous vide that will all help them learn to cook healthy and delicious meals.
My students are creative, inquisitive, and resourceful young people who rise to challenges that arise in their lives. They come from complicated home lives, they may work to support themselves, and some struggle with their mental health.
Despite setbacks and struggles, my students always find their way back to learning through asking questions, hands on projects, and relating it all back to their real lives.
My school is a public, alternative, transfer high school where students come from all five boroughs of New York City. We have an external learning model where students take internships as well as classes during the entire time that they are with us. Rather than emphasizing testing, students develop and present portfolios of their work as a graduation requirement.
My Project
Cooking is a life long skill, cooking for health is a way of life. In the inner city food desert neighborhoods where many of my students have grown up, learning how to cook healthy, fast, affordable meals can be a transformative experience that is one crucial piece in my school's holistic mission to point students towards a path lined with options for growth and change.
We have access to a working kitchen and basic supplies, but some better knives, a versatile Instapot, an herb garden kit, along with a few other things will help to take our work to the next level.
My Cooking for Life class, launched this year, has already gotten students excited about getting their hands dirty, trying new foods, and thinking about how to take control of their health. Your contributions would allow students to continue on their journey of being a healthy whole person.
