My students are in Post-High School ages 18-22 years old. They have significant cognitive disabilities. Most of my students are non verbal, but can communicate with pictures.
My students are working towards "transition" and becoming adults.
They are learning work skills, daily living skills, and adult living skills. They participate in job training, community access, adapted P.E., music therapy, speech and language therapy, and art.
My students are capable of doing many things and work hard to become more and more independent each day. They rise up to our high expectations daily.
My Project
These materials will allow my students the opportunity to prepare simple meals and snacks with proper equipment. Up until now, my students have only had the opportunity to use second-hand equipment or paper products. We have had to scavenge for materials and "make do" with whatever we could find. Being able to purchase new materials would enable my students to appropriately and more adequately prepare food. Dishes will allow the students to not only prepare the food but give them experience in washing the dishes as well.
In addition to food preparation, some of my students have sensory needs.
Weighted blankets and sensory "socks" would be helpful to those students when they feel overwhelmed with sensory stimulus.
