My students have limited to no access to the computer and internet and this time is really challenging for them. Many students are learning by sharing a cell phone between their five siblings, relying on learning packets provided by our school district, and free lunches being dispersed at a drop off site. Our kids already had challenges related to basic needs and during the pandemic these needs have dramatically increased. This has added lot of stress on the students and families I serve.
My Project
My students are such hard workers and with the lack of internet access, and basic school supplies their has been a huge impact on their learning. When I was off at college I frequently wrote letters to a woman who mentored me through high school and it was a great way to stay in touch with her. This will also be a great way for my students to continue working on writing and communicating regularly with their teacher.
In this project, I will send students letters along with pre-addressed envelopes and stamps so they are able to write back to me.
Students will be asked questions about how their learning is during the pandemic, how they are feeling, what they are doing while spending this time at home, and also be given drawing tutorials on their favorite book characters. This dialog back and fourth will allow students to practice sentence structure, letter writing, decoding skills, and narrative writing skills
