Construction Zone: Building a Delta Classroom Library

My students need a classroom library that sparks a love for reading, incorporates skills learned in class, and connects with their lives inside and outside of school.

My Students

While the Mississippi Delta is rich in culture and soul, students in our area more than often lack the resources to reach their potential. Books should be a way for them to see the world, experience new adventures and learn about exciting new people.

Each morning, bright and diverse faces fill my classroom from all over the rural county.

With limited supplies to work with, my kids engage in lively discussions and explore reading, writing and social studies. Student's hobbies range from basketball and hunting to cake decorating and zoo-keeping. Our room is filled with emerging personalities and some pure characters. My students enjoy being at school and learning from their teachers, peers ans selves. They thrive with hands-on activities, as well as group and individual work that incorporate all three subjects predominantly discussed in during our class time. I laugh and learn right along with them, as each day also brings the challenges associated with ever increasing state and local budget cuts. While parents in our school family are strong volunteers of time, money is not as easily available; nor are basic supplies and most noticeably classroom novels and books.

My Project

With an in-classroom library, my students would be able to explore their interests both in and out of the classroom. The books I have requested were compiled from informational sheets completed by my students and from personal knowledge of their interests. A scary collection of works by R.L. Stine and fantasy novels by Roald Dahl will engage any fifth grader with a thirst for the weird. Books centered on young female protagonist will relate to my girls seeking powerful images of women. Titles requested for our classroom library, such as those by Christopher Paul Curtis and Pam Muñoz Ryan, will also enrich the study of American history in our social studies lessons.

I feel that by reading a book, a child is adding a thread to the tapestry of their life.

Memories of characters, themes and the excitement of turning the page for just a few more words will sprout the love of reading. These books will not only benefit the students in this fifth grade class, but also those in coming years.
