Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! I teach kindergarten in a very diverse community in Anchorage Alaska. I have students who are Alaska Native, Hmong, Samoan, Vietnamese, Black, Mexican and Caucasian to name a few of the cultures and backgrounds represented in our school, and in my room.
Many of our students live at or below the poverty line.
Our school population has a large number of English Language Learners, some of whom are integrating into the U.S. school system and interacting with the english language for the first time.
I am passionate about establishing a learning environment where all students feel welcome, safe, engaged, and have ownership of their learning! A child's environment has a huge impact on their growth and it is my goal to create a space that fosters a deep love of knowledge and a desire for life long learning.
My Project
These items will help students gain independence through taking care of their physical needs. Winters in Alaska are brutal and often lead to hands with dry cracked skin.
Students are expected to go to recess until it is -10F which can be a painful experience for students who do not have adequate gear.
Help me teach my kindergartners how to protect their bodies by dressing appropriately for winter and maintaining their hair and skin health. This will ensure that they can come to school ready to learn. Instead of focusing on their basic needs.
