This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are eager leaners! Nothing excites them as much as a game, an activity, or a project.
My students are a very enthusiastic and diverse group of sixth graders.
They come from all over the city of San Francisco, from many different elementary schools. They love to talk and write and get involved in different kinds of activities.
Many of my students have special needs, are still learning English, or are concrete and tactile learners. Game play is an exciting avenue for content introduction.
My Project
Many of my students enter middle school with a hazy grasp of world geography. They need to have a grasp of the larger world around them to understand the social sciences.
In order to understand the flow of human history, they need to understand the spatial relationship between countries and continents.
Instead of quizzing them over and over, or instituting boring lectures that don't produce results, I want my students to experience the benefits and drawbacks of different locations on Earth by playing RISK and attempting to conquer each other's territory.
Through creative play, they will internalize the world map and see real-life ramifications of geographical location.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
