Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are identified as in need of Special Education. They only attend and engage in school when they feel safe and comfortable. They have loved spending lunch and other time in my classroom last year and I want to encourage this growth by giving them an even more comfortable space to relax, talk, read, get work done, or whatever they need to keep them learning. They are an AWESOME group of students who will so appreciate anything done for them.
My Project
In the Comfy Corner, my students can leave their traditional desks and chairs for a sofa, soft chair, or carpet along with softer lighting to encourage relaxation, calm, and focused writing or reading. They can utilize fidget gadgets, read books, listen to music, or chat in a comfortable environment that does not increase their anxiety like a high demand academic task might. There are tables to help keep everything organized, leading to a greater feeling of caring and safety.
Sometimes the traditional desks and chairs and lighting are emotionally too much for my students and they need a calm and comforting environment to relax in.
My students will also be expected to clean up the area themselves; thus the need for an electric broom!
