As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students come to me from many different and difficult home situations. Despite where they are coming from, I focus on making the classroom a community and family while at school.
Current novels and relatable reading material are essential in student success.
Adding this novel to our units of study will broaden the student perception of historical fiction. By making the learning relevant to our students we can increase their interest level and their overall performance.
They are eager and willing to learn and work hard, as long as they are respected, recognized and rewarded. They need the tools for success!
As part of our six units of study, we current have two that are fiction based. The novel study done in one unit is a book the students do not relate with and therefore show little interest. By adding relatable historical fiction we will increase engagement and learner outcomes.
Towers Falling is the perfect book to hook our students into historical fiction.
The main characters are relatable and show growth throughout the book. Students will be able to discuss character development and multiple themes easily. This novel will show the students how we are connected to our history and bring history to life.
