Imagine an eager group of six and seven-year-old children entering your house (classroom) and staying with you every day, for 180 days out of a year.
On that first day of first grade, some of the students are confident and thrilled to be at school, while others are holding their parent's arm tightly not knowing what to expect.
Others are experiencing schools in the United States for the first time and know little to no English. Some come from single-parent households, while others are being raised by two parents in the same home. Some are more fortunate than others and come having had breakfast each morning at home. Others rely on the school breakfast and lunch program for their meals.
On any given year this is a typical classroom at my school site. First graders are amazing and eager to learn. They all gather around the carpet on that first day of school for our first "Morning Meeting." This important first meeting is when the building of our classroom community begins. This is when the teaching of kindness and caring about oneself and others in the school community and beyond begins. This is first grade!
My Project
Currently, we have one desktop computer in the classroom for student use. Having Chromebooks in the classroom will offer more than additional access to online resources. In addition, Chromebooks would prepare students for the digital world and provide the opportunity to become computer literate. With Chromebooks in the classroom students would engage with interactive lessons. Chromebooks would accomodate different learning styles. Students would thrive!
Having this technology would help students develop higher-order critical thiniking skills and prepare them for the STEM professions of the future!
Not only would having Chromebooks provide opportunities for collaboration with peers, but they would also enhance and enrich students learning this year and in years to come. Please support this project! Please give my students every opportunity possible to achieve their goals, now and in the future!
