My Project
"A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" by Ishmael Beah is a powerful and thought-provoking memoir that can be a valuable read for 9th graders in Trenton, NJ, for several reasons.
"A Long Way Gone" addresses complex themes such as violence, resilience, trauma, and the human capacity for change which will spark meaningful classroom discussions and encourage critical thinking.
This can foster empathy and a broader perspective on global issues. As the memoir is compelling and has an accessible narrative style, even reluctant readers will be engaged. The more the students are engaged, the more they will be able to think critically and make meaningful connections between their ELA class, their other academic class, and their life outside of school.
Because this is the first time I'm teaching this memoir, I'm requesting Teachers-Pay-Teachers gift cards. The gift cards grant me access to the resources and flexibility I need to make my lessons with the new yet challenging text more effective, engaging, and tailored to my students' needs. It's a practical way to support education and help me excel in my mission to inspire and educate my students.
