I teach a great group of first graders who love to learn using many fun and hands-on ways. I teach at an equity plus school having about 75% of our students receiving free- or reduced-lunch. We also have about 20% of ESL Learners that attend our school. At the beginning of this school year we had a Curriculum Night for our first grade parents to come in and learn about our curriculum and the skills that need to be learned by their child this year. We gave examples of what kinds of activities can be done at home that helps to reinforce what is done in school. We also have Family Math Nights throughout the year when parents and their children come and learn about fun math activities that can be played at home to help their child learn the necessary math concepts. There is one MAJOR problem though. A lot of our parents at our school do not have the necessary supplies for their children to learn concepts at home. I have found some take-home packs that help to develop different skills in math, science, social studies, writing and reading, that are all taught in first grade. They target lower leveled and upper leveled learners. Along with this proposal, I am asking for a Spanish set of these. I feel like the ESL learners would have a lot of fun and therfore get excellent hands-on experiences if they were able to take something home to their parents in their own language. Their progress in school would improve greatly! These take home packs would greatly benefit my students and their parents because they would have all the resources needed in the package that goes home. This is a great way to help connect everybody-teachers, parents and most of all students-to work together for what is best for the child! Anything to help children learn is a plus in my book!! Thank you for your time in considering this proposal.
