Connecting STEM and Literature

My students need storybooks so they can connect reading to STEM activities.

My Students

My students are from a small, rural community where many of the families are economically disadvantaged. My students have also been identified with learning disabilities, and many face behavior disabilities too.

My students are excited to come to school where they feel safe and loved.

Despite all the obstacles they face, they are always eager to learn. They always come to school with a smile on their face. I am blessed to be their teacher and help them along in their journey.

My Project

My students are developing a love for both STEM activities and reading and I want to continue to develop this love by connecting the two. Each STEM activity relates to a specific storybook. For example, after the students read The Recess Queen, they will then create a playground using various supplies.

These books will connect reading to science, technology, engineering, and math.

Reading the books provides my students another opportunity to practice their reading fluency. Then the students are able to create a STEM project. I teach students who have learning disabilities and often when they are working on a STEM project, it is their chance to shine in the classroom.
