Connecting Literature to Social Studies

Help me give my students a book in hand for better reading comprehension.

My Project

Books are so important to my students and are truly valued. I am a fourth-grade teacher in an elementary school in a diverse area. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our classroom library to check out high-quality books. Each day students inquire when the newest books by their favorite authors will be added to the library so they can be the first to check out these books. There is a buzz about books and an excitement for reading in our school.

One of our favorites is a story called The Keeping Room by Anna Myers.

It is used as a mentor text in our literary analysis unit. It would be helpful if each student could have a book in their hands. It also integrates with our Revolutionary War Unit in Social Studies. We follow up by going to the exact place here in South Carolina as a field study. It is an amazing experience to see a connection to real life.

As of right now, I have one copy of the book and it is falling apart. I used it as a read aloud but I want to do more in-depth analysis. Putting a book in each student's hands will help them to fully understand the insights of the text and the wonders of this story. My kids will be very excited about having their own copies.
