Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 9th Grade ELA students in Trenton, NJ are amazing. Yes, every teacher says that about their students, but mine really are. I teach literature, and every year when I teach the "same old stories," I learn something new. I'm able to learn something new and exciting in a story I've taught for the past 10 years because my students bring their experiences--good, bad, ugly, joyous--into my room and use them to dig deep into the stories we're reading.

My 9th Grade ELA students in Trenton, NJ come from Black and Hispanic low-income families.

Many of my students are the first individual in their family to attend high school. Many of my students act as English-language interprets for their older family members, are surrogate parents for their younger family members, and work a part-time job to help support their family. All of my students dream of graduating high school and doing something great with their lives.

My Project

*2.5 million children across the country are enrolled in districts where there are no libraries.

*13 million children are enrolled in districts where the children's materials circulation is less than 10 per student, including 3.4 million students in poverty and 6.6 million students of color.

My 9th Grade ELA students fall into these statistics. The city of Trenton, NJ has just one branch of its library open. The library in my school building is physically small and woefully understocked. Study after study has shown that students who have access to books perform better in all aspects (in the classroom and beyond) of life. Will you consider helping me build my class library? I'm looking to stock up on contemporary young adult (YA) novels to complement the themes (the American dream, identity, coming of age, and heroes) my classes will focus on in 2021-22.
